We are proud to announce the Proton Therapy Fundamentals module. This module is the first in a series of three focused on proton therapy.
We are proud to announce the Proton Therapy Fundamentals module. This module is the first in a series of three focused on proton therapy. By completing these three modules, participants will acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in the field of proton therapy.
With the six-months Proton Therapy - The Fundamentals course, all components will be covered at a basic level. This course is especially suitable for RTT’s, Physicists, doctors and other medical or technical specialists starting in proton therapy environment or already work in the proton department and want to deepen their knowledge in preparation of the advanced courses.
Also participants who currently work in a photon radiotherapy department are very welcome to join to deepen their knowledge of proton therapy (preferably the participants have some experience in the treatment planning process). Interactive teaching sessions, focused on situations encountered in clinical practice, are an important component of the course.
The course Proton Therapy - The Fundamentals covers the main concepts of proton therapy and ensures that at the end of the course a participant can compare a photon plan against a proton plan and discuss the pros and cons from different perspectives.||

Curriculum Proton Therapy - The Fundamentals course
The Proton Therapy - The Fundamentals course will cover 8 hybrid/online meetings. In every meeting a different theme is interactively discussed around proton characteristics. The different sessions will cover the basic physical and radiobiological aspects of proton beams, technical and uncertainty characteristics, patient selection and medical aspects, IGPT and basic treatment planning comparisons between photon and proton plans.
Before each session the participants prepare different tasks before the meeting. During the online/hybrid group sessions, participants present the results of the tasks and interactively discuss with other participants, the moderator and with clinical experts. The course is offered in a hybrid way, meaning that the meetings can attended physical and online via Microsoft Teams. We encourage the Dutch participants to attend as much as possible the meetings physical.
After successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of Inholland Academy. This course can be used as an elective course in the masters’ program Medical Imaging Radiation Oncology. After successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of Inholland Academy. The course is suitable for those with a bachelor’s degree or higher who have some experience in treatment planning and who are interested in proton therapy and want to expand their knowledge and skills on this. For each potential participant, it will be determined whether they meet the admission requirements (diploma and/or experience) before they can participate. The course is suitable for those with a bachelor’s degree or higher who have some experience in treatment planning and who are interested in proton therapy and want to expand their knowledge and skills on this. For each potential participant, it will be determined whether they meet the admission requirements (diploma and/or experience) before they can participate. This assessment will be conducted based on certified documents and/or additional written or verbal information obtained through email correspondence or an online meeting with the module coordinator.
Potential participants include radiation therapy technologists (RTTs), medical physicists and radiation oncologists, including those in training, and medical engineers working in radiotherapy photon or proton departments.
